Dear Miss Tracy:

Before your last letter arrived, I had already lost my taste for coming to New York. Not that I could find no place to stay, because my brother owns three houses in Brooklyn, and there is always room at his home for me. But he tells me of the unlovely social conditions there. Robbing and cut-throating and such awful carryings on that he has resolved to move back to Florida so that his 15 year old son will have a chance to grow up decent. Then a white friend of mine went up for a month and only stayed one week. He too was distressed by what he saw there. I hate to look at things like that. That is what your blessed New Deal did for us. Crime in Harlem is rampant, and the police are helpless because the New Deal-promoted Negro politicians immediately let out a scream that Negroes are being persecuted the minute a Negro thug is arrested. I was there, and know that that is what happened about that Race riot in 1936.1044 Mayor LaGuardia and the New Deal gang passed it off as something that happened because the “poor Negroes were so hungry and down-trodden.” But I happened to know that it was promoted by the Communists, and nothing was said about it because they had all pledged to vote for Roosevelt in the 1936 election. The blame was hurled at the door of the capitalists who did not vote for Roosevelt. Oh, poor America is in an awful spiritual state! I am thankful that a solid kind of a man like Truman is in. But I also see that the New Dealers are sniping at him already. His repudiation of their dizzy theories is driving dear Eleanor and her cohorts wild. Take good care of your self, and get rid of that cold.
